N2Y4 Reflections
Welcome to the N2Y4 Reflection Forum. This space is designed to help all of us continue the conversations and thinking that began on Day 2 of the N2Y4 Conference. Please comment and vote, and add your ideas as they relate to N2Y4. At the Conference, our discussions were oriented around the “A-Ha!” moments or open questions, and we’d like to keep that focus here. Please keep each comment/idea to just one separate thought. We’ll use this info to continue shaping the future of N2YX and NetSquared.
Thanks for your participation, time, and ideas!

How can we improve collaboration?
Improving and expanding opportunities for collaboration was a big topic at N2Y4. Whether it is project-to-project, funder-to-project, volunteer/ally-to-project, or n2y4 participant-to-participant, this topic came up repeatedly in the conference reflection sessions. Please add your thoughts and questions on collaboration and respond to others here. (Note: there are 30 starting votes as there were 30 comments on this topic)

Let's talk about your theory of change.
Many of you commented that for a competition and conference about using the web for social change, conversations around the theory of change for projects (and N2 itself) didn't happen. Please add your thoughts and questions on the addressing our respective theories of change and respond to others here. (Note: there are 13 starting votes as there were 13 comments on this topic)

People-to-people interaction is important.
People-to-people, face-to-face, or meat space. Whatever you call it, actually shaking hands and working with folks in the same room is important for a wide variety of reasons. Please add your thoughts and questions on the importance of people-to-people interaction and respond to others here. (Note: there are 12 starting votes as there were 12 comments on this topic)

How do we deal with the “shiny hammer” problem?
This topic is a combination of two related threads: “When you have a hammer every problem looks like a nail” + concerns that some of the tools are “shiny” rather than practical. Please add your thoughts and questions on this “shiny hammer” problem and respond to others here. (Note: there are 9 starting votes as there were 9 comments on this topic)

Community management is bigger than we think
Communities of developers need attention and facilitation. P2P fundraising campaigns on mobile and social networks need resourced and managed. How can we lift up our trained community organizers and get them wired? How can we get the fundamentals of community management (or facilitation more accurately) disseminated and put into action?

We need more funders around the table.
A few of you commented that you wanted to have more funders be more involved at the conference. What are their concerns, what are they interested in funding, and how are they making decisions? This is still an open question for us, and we’d love to hear your ideas. Our concern is that if we mandate participation at certain times or in certain events than we’ll have to manage some kind of consequence for those who don’t participate – something we want to avoid. On the other hand, we know that this year’s very free-form, open-ended invitation to participation didn’t ensure enough collaboration in the lead-in to the conference. Maybe N2 provides greater structure but it’s still an optional element? Thoughts?
